MedEvac

When urgent medical situation arises, every seconds counts

The Golden Hour is the most critical time in sustaining an individual’s lifeline in every major accident or illness. This is where medevac is called for and air ambulance service could make the difference when it comes to life and death.

Several people in PNG don’t get medical attention within the golden hour which is very crucial in saving lives. Pacific International Hospital will address the emergency medical needs of people who are on the outskirts and far from the city limits.

Medical referral, medical assistance, and in rare but serious cases medical evacuation is available to those who are in need of essential medical care or treatment that is locally unavailable or inadequate. “If medically necessary”, patients may be evacuated to the nearest place where adequate medical facilities exist as determined by the affiliated physician on site. The necessary coordination with your insurance company will be done by PIH.

A patient Transport or Medical Evacuation is appropriate when medical capabilities at that location cannot provide the diagnosis, care or treatment that a patient may need to sustain his/her life or health. The system should not be used to facilitate elective or non-essential medical care or treatment. These procedures address the transportation and medical care that may arise in the following situations:

  1. Patients from any other location requiring Medevac to medical centres abroad involving/not involving a component of stabilization on site or near Port Moresby.
  2. Patients at PIH who require transportation to Australia/Philippines/Singapore or to any other proximate overseas medical facility for further evaluation or treatment.
  3. Patients from any provinces or field camps who need air transport to PIH for further medical evaluation or treatment

Levels Of Medical Transportation

The classification is driven by the immediacy in which the patient needs to receive more comprehensive medical attention and the resources required to care for the patient during and after transport. Patient transports are tracked and reported separately from Medevacs, specifically to avoid the level of visibility and resource commitment, so the two should not be confused.

Urgent Medevac

This is the highest category of Medevac, and indicates that the patient requires transport AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, even if there is no scheduled flight. This may include hiring the services of a chartered aircraft service to meet the time frames needed to provide appropriate care or hiring the services of a charter aircraft.

Priority Medevac

Specific arrangements will be made on a case by-case basis as determined by the Medical Director in consultation with the treating physician.

This category of Medevac is less urgent and indicates that the patient requires transport on the NEXT SCHEDULED FLIGHT. Where the patient can be brought in as

In this case PIH can provide medical attendants to accompany the patient on commercial flights and ensure safe handing over at the receiving facility.

Patient Transport

This category refers to air transportation of a patient on a NEXT AVAILABLE SEAT basis. It is not considered a Medevac and is numbered and tracked separately through a similar system. These patients are flying for medical reasons, but DO NOT REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL MEDICAL HANDLING en route. Clearance from the airline in obtained by PIH.
